Reading Strategy
Understanding sentence organisation (1)
Reading is not about understanding every line. A passage is organised to present an idea in sentences, so reading is about understanding these ideas or meaning.
Some passages contain complex sentences which may be easily misunderstood. Remember that:
 
the main idea may not come first in the sentence, but may be introduced by another clause or phrase.
Example
              Introductory clause                       Main idea
Although we know very little about these animals, we are learning a lot more about them.
 
B the main idea may be modified by another clause or phrase inserted into the main clause.
Example

The tourists, who had never seen a panda before, became wildly excited.
 
C the main idea may be modified by another clause or phrase coming after it.
