When Carly Williams was reporting on a farm in North Carolina, US, she laughed when a zebra (斑马) pushed its nose into her car.
Carly, 15, is a student at Nation Ford High, South Carolina and hopes to become a television anchor (主播). She is quickly making herself noticed.
Not long ago, she got a call from Teen Kids News, which is a weekly show that airs across the US. Carly had sent a few broadcasts she had done for her school news program to the show’s makers in New York. A producer contacted Carly and asked if she would like to work for the company.
“All I could say was, yes, yes, yes,” Carly said. “I didn’t even hesitate (犹豫).”Carly said she became interested in broadcast journalism when she was in the sixth grade. One day, she heard that forest fires were burning nearby. After sports class, she went out into the forest and reported on the fires. She fell in love with broadcasting, and from then on, she tried to do it as much as she could.
But despite doing what she loves, Carly has to face both good and bad comments from audience (听众) members. “Everyone has a different opinion and I’ve always tried to tell Carly that you can’t listen to it,” said Lori Williams, a former CNN producer. “If it’s what you love to do, it will outshine everything else.”
Carly’s advice to other young broadcasters is to look for support from friends and family. “With every negative comment, there are five positive comments, and that’s how I think about it,” she said.
The first program Carly anchored was about an artist’s pumpkin patch. In the program, she asked teenagers what they thought of the artist’s work.
“I was a little nervous. I’m going through my lines thinking, ‘No pressure’,” Carly said.
She has also reported at a Coldplay concert and met Kathie Lee Gifford, an American TV host. Gifford told Carly to continue doing what she loves because “it will lead to big things”. “Getting advice from her, especially, was absolutely awesome (棒极了),” Carly said.

24. What made Teen Kids News notice Carly?
   A. Her visit to the show’s producer.
   B. Her report on a farm in North Carolina.
   C. Her phone call to the show’s makers.

It’s OK to say you’ve never heard of grime (伦敦地下音乐) – unless you’re from the UK. That’s because this music genre (流派) was invented in the UK in the early 2000s.
To someone who’s not familiar with underground music culture, it’s easy to get confused (迷惑的) between hip-hop and grime since they are both noisy. And many people didn’t bother (费心) to tell them apart, until earlier this month when grime stars like Stormzy and J Hus led this year’s Mobo – “music of black origin” – award nominations (提名) in the UK.
Just like UK electronic music (电子音乐) and hip-hop, from which grime drew influence, it mostly reflects (反映) the thoughts of young people. But different from hip-hop, grime singers sing in dialects (方言) with strong accents, giving a special flavor to their songs.
Lady Leshurr, known as the “Grime Queen”, said that she once tried to hide her accent, as she didn’t want people to judge her, according to The Independent. But one day, she realized that she didn’t need to change herself just to please others. And there’s no doubt that this is the essence (精髓) of grime music: be yourself.
“Grime has challenged contemporary music in its production aesthetic (美感) and in its lyrical approach,” Mykaell Riley, director of the black music research unit at the University of Westminster, London, told the BBC.
Also different from the hip-hop culture, which usually focuses on being rich, grime singers pay more attention to social phenomena (现象) like the European refugee (难民) problem and the gap between the rich and poor.
Although still quite a young music genre, grime seems to be getting favored by more and more people. In 2016, the English grime artist Skepta won the Mercury Prize with his album Konnichiwa, beating big names like David Bowie and Radiohead.
However, no matter whether grime is one day accepted by the mainstream (主流的) music world or not, one thing is for sure: in grime, singers always stay true to themselves.

28. People are most likely to confuse grime music with ______ music.
    A. jazz                B. blues             C. country            D. hip-hop
29. Which of the following is a big name in grime music?
    A. David Bowie.                    B. Radiohead.
B. Lady Leshurr.                   D. Mykaell Riley.
30. What makes grime music different from other music genres?
   A. It is known for being very noisy.
   B. It reflects the thoughts of young people.
   C. It is sung in dialects with strong accents.
   D. It is mainly popular with the rich.
31. What is the essence of grime music?
    A. The search for a peaceful life.
B. Staying true to oneself.
    C. Challenging traditions.
D. Caring for the community.

                                     D
Think of the empty cities in zombie (僵尸) movies. The streets, the shops and the schools are still there just like they would be on a normal day, except there are no people to be seen. It is the emptiness that scares you.
Now a real-life “ghost city” is being built in the US. But fortunately, it has nothing to do with zombies – it is going to be a place to test the technology of the future. Called CITE – the Center for Innovation (创新), Testing and Evaluation (测评) – the city is the idea of technology company Pegasus Global Holdings. Covering an area of 15 square miles (39 square kilometers), it is the size of a small US city and sits in the middle of the New Mexico desert.
But why do we need an empty city that nobody will call home? The reason is that we can’t afford to test the latest technologies in the cities that we live in – they might not be ready and could cause problems and danger in our everyday lives.
“It will be a true laboratory without the problems and safety issues (问题) that come with people living there. Here you can break things and run into things, and get used to how they work, before taking them out into the market,” Pegasus managing director Robert Brumley told technology magazine Wired.
In fact, without worrying about hurting people, anybody with a new idea can ask to test it in this city. Just think about the possibilities – driverless cars can move freely on the streets, homes with robots can be designed and energy sources like nuclear (核的) power can also be put to the test.
As good as the idea may seem, however, there are still doubts about CITE. “One of the most difficult things to do when developing these new technologies is to have them safely move around people, who can suddenly jump out in front of something,” Reese Jones, a founder of Singularity University, US, told Fortune magazine.
Jones is worried that, even if a technology works perfectly well in CITE, introducing it to a real city will still be a whole different story because there will be people living in the city.
But no matter what, perhaps we should wait until CITE is finished in 2018. Maybe it will turn out to work just fine.

32. The empty city is being built ______.
   A. so people can experience the technology of the future
   B. to try driverless cars and robots in
   C. to test new technology in
   D. as a place full of the latest technology
33. Which of the following statements is TRUE about CITE?
    A. It is located beside the New Mexico desert.
    B. It was started by Singularity University.
    C. Things in the city can easily be broken down and built again.
    D. Anyone can ask to try out their new designs there.
34. According to Jones, ______.
   A. CITE offers great possibilities for future technology
   B. new technologies will work perfectly well with the help of CITE
   C. settings in CITE should be real in order to create the best results
   D. testing results in CITE may not prove to work in a real city
35. What is the main purpose of this article?
   A. To explain why CITE could be very helpful.
   B. To show that CITE has a bright future.
   C. To explain CITE and problems it may have.
   D. To offer a good solution that will help to develop future technologies.

第一节  短文改错(共10小题;每小题l分,满分10分)
The biggest challenge I have overcome is stepping out of my comfort zone. In the year of 2013 which I was 15, I joined an exchange student program. I sent to Germany alone and lived with the host family.
At first it was a huge failure for me. Thanks for my host mom, she helped me a lot. She told me some tips to make friends, such as joining a sports club and invited my classmates to watch a movie. Surprising, all of the tips she gave me work out! She also suggested that I can introduce my culture to my classmates. To my astonish, they were both interested in Chinese culture.
Gradually, my discomfort zone became a part of my comfort zone.

作文
Dear Sara,
I have received your email. You asked me for some suggestions on how to be a guest in China. Here are some suggestions accepted by most Chinese.
Firstly, in China it is usually considered impolite to visit someone with nothing in hand, so you’d better bring some gifts, such as some fresh fruits, a box of milk and so on. What’s more, table manners are also of great importance. We Chinese like to treat our guests with many delicious dishes. When at table, you should not begin eating first, but should follow the host or the senior one. Sometimes, the host will help you with some dishes, which is different from western traditions, and you should show your appreciation.
All in all, just as the old saying goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”
