I can still remember it as if it happened yesterday. I was a college freshman and had stayed up most of the night before laughing and talking with friends. Now just before my first class of the day my eyelids were feeling heavier and heavier and my head was drifting down to my desk to make my textbook a pillow. A few minutes’ nap time before class couldn’t hurt, I thought.
Boom! I lifted my head immediately and my eyes opened wider than saucers. I looked around with my heart beating quickly trying to find the cause of the noise. My young professor was looking back at me with a mischievous, boyish smile on his face. He had intentionally dropped the pile of textbooks he was carrying onto my desk. “Good morning !” he said, still smiling. “I’m glad to see everyone is awake. Now let’s get started.”
For the next hour I wasn’t sleepy at all. It wasn’t from the shock of my professor’s textbook alarm clock either. Instead, it was from the attractive discussion he led. With knowledge and good humor, he made the material come alive. His insights were full of both wisdom and loving kindness. And the enthusiasm and joy that he taught with were contagious(有感染力的). I left the classroom not only wide awake, but a little smarter and a little better as well.
I learned something far more important than not sleeping in class that day too. I learned that if you are going to do something in this life, do it well, do it with joy, and make it an expression of your love. What a glorious place this world would be if all of us did our work joyously and well ! What a beautiful world we could create if every doctor, teacher, musician, cook, waitress, poet, miner, farmer, and laborer made their work an expression of their love ! Don’t sleepwalk your way through life then. Wake up! Let your love fill your work and your soul. Life is too short not to live it well.
24. What did the author want to do just before his first class of the day?
A. Talk with his friends. B. Take a short sleep.
C. Get his eyes examined. D. Stay away from the class.
25. The underlined word “mischievous” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”.
A. naughty B. tricky C. sensitive D. dishonest
26. What else did the author learn that day?
A. Students should not sleep in class but respect their teachers.
B. Everyone should love his job and sleepwalk his way through life.
C. Life is too limited to make your work an expression of your love.
D. People from all walks of life should do their jobs with wisdom and love.
27. What can be inferred from this passage?
A. The professor often kept his students sharp by using a textbook alarm.
B. The author was attracted by the professor’s great wisdom and enthusiasm.
C. The author left the two-hour period not only wide awake, but a little smarter.
D. Though the author was frightened awake, he was not clear-headed in the class.

You may know the difference between an American accent and a British accent. But do you know what a “posh” (优雅的) British accent is? The difference may be more important than you think.
There are many different accents in the UK, some of them very difficult for foreigners to understand. In the south, many people speak with what is known as a “posh” accent, an accent that makes people think of the British Royal Family and upper-class people in the UK. In this accent, “grass” sounds more like “gr-ar-ss”, and “bath” sounds more like “barth”. Often, British people who take jobs on TV or elsewhere have to change their own accents and make them “posher” to be accepted.
So, do accents still matter? Last year Alexander Baratta, PhD, from the UK’s University of Manchester spoke about “accentism” – people being treated worse because of how they speak – and compared it to racism, according to The Guardian. In a study, he asked people why they changed their accents and how it made them feel.
It’s not hard to see why they do it – everyone wants to do well in life, and the best way to do that is to “fit in”. Still, there is a price to pay, Baratta said. Facing the world with a voice that is not your own can hurt “your sense of being”. This was shown when a third of those questioned said they were “ashamed” about changing their accents.
What can be done to stop people changing how they sound? Well, times may be changing, too. The Guardian’s leader writer Hugh Muir has a suggestion: “The listener must adapt when needed. The speaker must make themselves understood, whatever accent they choose.”
So as you’re learning English, don’t worry too much about how your accent makes you sound – as long as it’s clear what you’re saying!
Ziyuanku.com28.What is the article mainly about?
A. How we should deal with different accents.
B. Why we should learn a posh British accent.
C. The problem of accentism and ways to deal with it.
D. Why some British people like to change their accents.
29. According to the article, a posh accent reminds people of ______ in the UK.
A. working-class people B. upper-class people
C. poorly-educated people D. fashionable young people
30. We can see from the article that changing their accents ______.
A. made most of the people asked feel posh
B. meant that some of the people asked were treated worse
C. made some of the people asked feel bad about themselves
D. made most of the people asked feel unsure of themselves
31. What are people advised to do with their accents?
A. To make themselves clear in the accent they choose.
B. To warn listeners to accept different accents.
C. To make no changes to their accent at all.
D. To adapt their accent to their listeners.

The government of Norway is planning to build an unusual storage center on an island in the Arctic Ocean. The place would be large enough to hold about two million seeds. The goal is to present all crops known to scientists. The British magazine New Scientist published details of the plan last month. The structure will be designed to protect the world’s food supply against nuclear war, climate change and other possible threats. It will be built in a mountain on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen. The mountain is less than one thousand kilometers from the North Pole, the northernmost position on earth.
An international group called the Global Crop Diversity Trust is working on the project. The director of the group, Cary Fowler, spoke to New Scientist. He said the project would let the world rebuild agriculture if, in his word, “the worst came to the worst”. Norway is expected to start work next year. The project is expected to cost three million dollars. Workers will drill(钻孔) deep in the side of a sandstone mountain. Temperatures in the area never rise above 0ºC. The seeds will be protected behind walls a meter thick and high-security door.
The magazine report says the collection will represent the products of ten thousand years of farming. Most of the seeds at first will come from collections at seed banks in Africa, Asia and Latin America. To last a long time, seeds need to be kept in very low temperatures. Workers will not be present all the time. But they plan to replace the air inside the storage space each winter. Winter temperatures on the island are about eighteen degrees below 0ºC. The cold weather would protect the seeds even if the air could not be replaced.
Mr. Fowler says the proposed structure will be the world’s safest gene bank. He says the plant seeds would only be used when all other seeds are gone for some reason. Norway first put forward the idea in the 1980s. But safety concerns delayed the plan. At that time, the Soviet Union was meeting in Rome of the Food and Agriculture Organization.
32.The project is meant to ______.
A.increase the world’s food output in the future
B.carry out some scientific experiments on plant genes
C.build an exhibition centre of the world’s plant seeds
D.protect crop seeds from dying out in case of possible disasters
33.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the above passage?
A.The government of Norway will perform the project alone.
B.Seeds to be collected there were produced ten thousand years ago.
C.Spitsbergen is chosen because it is free of the nuclear war forever.
D.Temperature is a major consideration when choosing the storage place.
34.We can infer from the text that _______.
A.Norway had meant to build the storage centre about 30 years before.
B.The storage center will greatly promote world agriculture
C.People will get newly-developed seeds from the center every year.
D.There haven’t been any seed storage centers in the world before.
35.What is probably the best title of the passage?
A.The Best Place to Store Seeds
B.Noah’s Ark(诺亚方舟)of Plant Seeds in Plan
C.Concerns of World Food Supply
D.A New Way to Feed the World

Did you know that if you need an alarm clock to wake up in the morning, you’re probably sleep-deprived (缺失)? ____36_______ . On average, American teens get two hours less than the average 9.2 hours of sleep they need each night to function at their best.
There are many reasons why teens don’t get enough sleep. ____37_______ . When your parents were young, they might have read a book or watched television before trying to go to sleep. But today’s teens are likely to be surfing the Internet, texting, emailing, or playing video games right before bed. ____38_______ . And using them right before bed can result in difficulty getting to sleep. According to a survey by the National Sleep Foundation, teens with four or more electronic equipment in their rooms are much more likely than their peers to get an insufficient amount of sleep at night, and are almost twice as likely to fall asleep in school and while doing homework.
____39_______ . In the National Sleep Foundation survey, three-quarters of the teens took at least one drink with caffeine every day, and nearly one-third consumed two or more every day. With all the trendy “high-energy” drinks and coffees out there right now, it’s easy to get a caffeine overload and that’s not good for sleep.
So what can you do if you’re in lack of sleep? “The good news is that you only have to make up about a third of what you have lost, to function and feel better,” says Dr. Mahowald at a sleep disorders center. ____40_______ . But sleeping until noon on the weekend can cause problems --- you’ll likely be wide-eyed until late those nights. Instead, try keeping a reasonable, regular sleeping and waking schedule.
A. One of them is a relatively new development.
B.Those extra two hours of sleep on Saturday and Sunday mornings can really help.
C.Most teens don’t get enough sleep.
D.Many teens also drink too much caffeine to sleep well.
E.Electronic devices are more exciting than simply watching television.
F.Researchers also have found that biology plays a role in teens’ sleep patterns.
G.Many school districts are shifting their start times to later morning for school students.

Good morning, everyone! It’s my honor to be here to make a short speech.
Recently I have found that some of our classmates can’t study efficiently. Some can’t help falling asleep in class, because they often study too late into the night. Others seldom have sports, which surely does harm to their health.
As we know, enough sleep is of great importance for us senior 3 students. We can concentrate our mind in class with sufficient sleep, so we should try to make wise use of our time, striking a balance between work and leisure. Besides, doing proper exercise every day can benefit us a lot, keeping fit, reducing stress and so on. Let’s spare some time to do all kinds of sports. And only in this way can we keep a good mood and study well.
That’s all. Thank you for listening!
