At 2:30 on December 5,1945, five US Navy training planes took off in clear weather from the base Lauderdale,Florida. The planes flew east over the coast ... and disappeared. The group was Flight 19, on a run between Florida and Bahamas. Tailor was the group leader. At about 3:40, Tailor reported that his compasses were not reading properly. The other planes followed their leaders aimlessly, first east, then west, then northeast over the ocean, as Tailor tried to make sure of the direction by radio. Then, suddenly Tailor was heard to give orders to dive ...
Quickly, two giant Martin seaplanes were sent up to search for Flight 19. Several hours later, the wind became strong and visibility dropped. A return to base was ordered. But only one of the Martin seaplanes landed. Four days later, the Navy and Coast Guard combed a 100,000 square miles area with more than 100 planes and ships. No sign was ever shown of the missing planes.
Today, people have noted the disappearance of many ships and planes in the southwest part of the North Atlantic and began to call this area the Bermuda Triangle(百慕大三角区).
The points of the triangle are Bermuda,Puerto Rico and a spot in the Gulf of Mexico, west of Florida. It is a twofaced water world of tiny islands, bright beaches and beautiful waters. Yet thick fogs, powerful currents and sudden storms are hidden behind this smiling surface.
1.Flight 19 disappeared because ________.
A.the wind became strong and visibility dropped
B.Tailor was given wrong orders to dive
C.Tailor couldn't read his compasses correctly
D.something unknown made the compasses unable to work as usual
根据文章第一段的“At about 3:40, Taylor reported that his compasses were not reading properly. The other planes followed their leader aimlessly, firs east, then west, then northeast over the ocean, as Taylor tried to make sure of the direction by radio.”
2.Flight 19 disappeared ________ the Atlantic Ocean.
A.in the southeast part of
B.in the northeast part of
C.to the southwest of Bermuda in
D.to the northeast of Bermuda in
根据文章第三段的“Today, people have noted the disappearance of many ships and planes in the southwest part of the North Atlantic and began to call this area the Bermuda Triangle(百慕大三角区).”
3.How many planes disappeared altogether that day?
A.Five.                       B.Six.
C.Two.                                          D.Only one.
根据文章第一段的“... five US Navy training planes took off in clear weather from the base Lauderdale, Florida. The planes flew east over the coast... and disappeared.”和文章第二段的“Quickly, two giant Martin seaplanes were sent up to search for Flight 19...But only one of the Martin seaplanes landed.”
4.The underlined word “comb” in the passage means “________”.
A.cover with

In May, 2007, a huge lake in Chile disappeared overnight. The only things left behind were a large, 30metredeep pit, icebergs, and dry soil! All of the water and its contents were gone. A river that flowed from the lake was reduced to a very small stream. Word is starting to spread across the Internet, and UFO enthusiasts (爱好者) are putting forth theories as to how something like this could have happened.
This wasn't a small lake or pond, either—it was about five miles long! The last time geologists saw it was in March, 2007 and nothing appeared strange about it at all. When this story first broke, many people thought it was just a joke, and indeed it does seem to bizarre to be true. It is true, however, despite how confusing it is. Geologists report huge cracks(裂缝) at the bottom of the pit. Did the water somehow drain (流光) through the cracks? Was there some sort of earthquake?
One glacier specialist explained to a Chilean newspaper that the lake itself did not even exist three decades ago. So, is it possible that the landscape in that part of the world is reforming itself? Geologists and glacier specialists are now doing tests to see what they can find out about the landscape in that area. Some media reports are trying to claim that the water was actually drained by aliens! Is it caused by global warming? Or, is there a scientific explanation for what has happened? Only time will tell.
This isn't the first time a lake disappeared out of nowhere. There have been a few examples in the past where an earthquake caused water to drain. The only problem with this theory in this case is that there had been no reports of earthquakes in that area in the spring of 2007.
1.The last time geologists saw the lake, they most probably ________.
A.showed no interest in it
B.noticed something unusual about it
C.thought something would happen to it soon
D.didn't expect it would disappear all of a sudden
根据第二段的“The last time geologists saw it was in March, 2007 and nothing appeared strange about it at all.”
2.The underlined word “bizarre” in the second paragraph means ________
A.strange             B.exciting
C.important                            D.interesting
解析:选A。
3.What can we know from what the glacier specialist said in Paragraph 3?
A.There is a scientific explanation for the disappearance of the lake.
B.The landscape in the lake's area is reforming.
C.All things happen for a reason.
D.The lake was not there about thirty years ago.
根据第三段的“One glacier specialist explained to a Chilean newspaper that the lake itself did not even exist three decades ago.”
4.After reading the passage, we know that the cause of the disappearance of the lake________.
A.was an earthquake                        B.was global warming
C.still remains a mystery                        D.will never be found out
通读全文,尤其根据第三段的“Or, is there a scientific explanation for what has happened? Only time will tell.”
5.What's the best title for this passage?
